ZAMBIA beat Mozambique 2-0 yesterday in a formality match to finish on top of Group B with nine points at the COSAFA under-20 Championship in South Africa and today face the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the semi-finals.

The junior Chipolopolo who already qualified to the semis after a 3-0 win over Malawi last Sunday showcased brilliant football. From the start, Zambia dominated the game causing havoc in the Mozambican half at Mogwase Stadium.

Joseph Phiri opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Patson Daka and Kenneth Kalunga failed to increase Zambia’s advantage before the break.

In second half, Mozambique picked up speed but lacked coordination in the frontline costing them the victory. Substitute Fashion Sakala doubled the scores in the 80th minute.

Coach Beston Chambeshi said he was happy the boys played according to instructions and converted the chances.

Chambeshi said Mozambique proved to be a strong side especially in second half. “I am happy that the team recorded a third straight win. Mozambique is a strong team and gave us a good run. But our boys are playing very well,” he said. He predicted a tough semi-final against DRC this evening. He said the victory over Mozambique was a morale booster as the team faces a tough encounter in their quest for the title. “We have a tough semi-final ahead and the boys need to remain focused. DRC has a good side but we will emerge victors. The target is to win the title and Zambia will not relent,” he said.

Chambeshi is expected to maintain Mangani Banda in goal while Chrispin Sakulanda, Boyd Musonda and Enock Mwepu will man the midfield.

DRC beat Malawi 1-0 yesterday to finish on top of Group D with seven points. The Central African side recorded a barren draw in their opening match before beating Comoros 2-0.

If Zambia beats DRC, she will meet the winner between South Africa and Angola in the finals.
