WE have managed to keep the cholera epidemic in check despite our proximity to Lusaka, says Chongwe district commissioner, Mr Fraser Musonda.

Speaking on behalf Mr Musonda district administrative Officer Ms. Laura Gondwe said the epidemic preparedness committee deserved a pat on the back for the good measures put in place to fight the disease.

Ms Gondwe said this when she addressed the district epidemic preparedness committee.  “We must give ourselves a pat on the back for the good measures put in place to fight the disease.

We recorded the first case in October, but our quick response has kept the disease in check. I would like to commend all of you for joining this fight. The public health workers deserve a very warm applause for being very active in this period,” he said.

The DC called on the committee not to relax despite the good outlook. “We must not slacken in our efforts despite a remarkable positive result. We must continue to preach and practice good hygiene habits,” he said.

In the same meeting district health office surveillance officer, Mr. Kelvin Mwakapushi revealed that the district had four cholera cases undergoing treatment at Ngweree rural health centre.

“We have recorded 26 confirmed cholera cases and successfully treated 25 patients since the disease outbreak. Unfortunately we recorded one death.

“We will continue to be on our feet to make sure that we increase surveillance, awareness so as to totally eradicate the disease,” Mr. Mwakapushi said.
