ZACA opposes proposed K5 education levy

By MILLENNIUM REPORTER

THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has opposed calls for the introduction of an education levy to help fund the new school curriculum without adequate consultation and assurance of its benefits to citizens.

Recently, stakeholders in the education sector proposed the introduction of an education levy of K5 for households with television sets to support the new school curriculum.

But ZACA Executive Secretary Juba Sakala said instead of charging residents, Government and other stakeholders must find other ways to fund the implementation of the new curriculum.

Mr Sakala argues that while the plan is well-intended, it is ill-timed as citizens continue to face economic hardships.
