PATHOLOGIST IN COURT OVER FAKE DOLLARS

A University Teaching Hospital pathologist yesterday appeared before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court for allegedly being found in possession of $83,600 counterfeit currency.

In this matter, Dr. Daniel Kaonga Muswahu, a pathologist at the University Teaching Hospital, stands charged with two counts of possession of Counterfeit Currency Notes contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

The matter came up yesterday before Magistrate David Simusamba for trial.

When the matter came up, one witness testified and said the accused had in possession the said counterfeit notes.

Wilson Tembo 44, a taxi driver at UTH said Dr. Muswahu who had been his client for some time came to his car around 12 hours on March 14 2017 and told him to take him somewhere.

“The Doctor came to my car with a bag and told me to take him somewhere, he put the bag behind the back seat of the car and we proceeded,” he testified.

Tembo said as they were going, Dr Muswahu told him to stop at Levy Junction as he went out to an unknown place.

He said when the doctor came back, about five men came running targeting him.

“The men came to my car and asked me to switch off my engine, searched the car and found the bag which was behind the car,” he said.

He also testified that after the 5 men, who were Drug Enforcement Commission officers searched them, the doctor was found with about 500 US Dollars in the pocket of his jacket, and found about 83, 000 US Dollars in the bag.

Tembo said the officers asked the doctor if the money belonged to him and he admitted.

“We were later taken to DEC where the money was separated and put in bundles, the money had the same serial numbers, and after counting the amount 83, 600 US Dollars, ” he said.

The matter has been adjourned to December 11 2017 for continuation of trial.
