PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has congratulated his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame following his resounding victory in the just-ended presidential election.

President Kagame garnered 98.63 percent of the votes in last week’s election to give him another seven-year mandate after ruling the country for 17 years since coming into power in 2000.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations, Amos Chanda yesterday, President Lungu said President Kagame’s re-election was a demonstration of the confidence the people of Rwanda had in his leadership and vision for that country.

President Lungu said the Zambian government looked forward to continued cooperation with the Rwandan government in addressing issues of mutual interest at bilateral and multilateral levels.

“I wish to convey, on behalf of the government and the people of the Republic of Zambia, and indeed on my own behalf, heartfelt congratulations on your resounding re-election as president of the Republic of Rwanda,” President Lungu said.

He also said the Zambian government was keen on enhancing cooperation between Zambia and Rwanda in key sectors of the two countries’ economies for their mutual benefit, as well as for the advancement of the regional and African developmental agendas.
