Govt to focus on practical skills to enhance education

GOVERNMENT will soon procure basic equipment in the teaching and learning of agricultural science, says Minister of General Education Dennis Wanchinga.

He said agricultural science was a practical subject which needed massive land where pupils could practice agricultural farming practices and techniques.

Dr Wanchinga said the Government had taken practical steps to reform the country’s education system from theory to practical which could support the country’s economic diversification and job creation.

He said the Government had made steps in providing education that would produce enterprising graduates.

Dr Wanchinga said imparting practical skills in young people would lead to the creation of a strong and solid economic foundation for many generations to come.

“The surest ways of creating jobs among the citizens is by imparting practical skills, knowledge and values through education,” he said.

He noted that agricultural science was one of the vocational skills and training courses that had been introduced under the new curriculum to ensure that learners were empowered with skills.

The minister was speaking during the flagging off of the distribution of various learning equipment procured at a cost K235 million.

Dr Wanchinga said the learning equipment would be distributed to all schools across the country to support the teaching and learning of specific subjects under the vocational career pathway.

The subjects include bricklaying and plastering, carpentry and joinery, metal fabrication, electrical engineering and home management.

He commended various cooperating partners for the technical and financial support rendered towards the implementation of the Zambia Education Curriculum Framework.
