Mulenga Sata ditches PF, rejoins UPND

By KETRA KALUNGA
MULENGA Sata has quit the Patriotic Front (PF) again to rejoin UPND but there is already speculation that he has been bought to contest the Kabwata parliamentary seat on the ruling party’s ticket.
Mr Sata, whose father, late President Michael Sata founded the Patriotic Front disclosed in an interview yesterday that he did not vote for the PF in 2016 and the August 12, 2021 elections hence his decision not to continue being a member of the former ruling party.
Mr Sata said he deemed it fit to go back to the UPND, that it was important for him to harmonise the situation.
“Yes, I have renewed my vows with the UPND, it’s important for me to harmonise the situation. I didn’t vote for Edgar Lungu and the PF in 2016 and 2021 and I couldn’t see myself supporting them going forward,” he said.
Mr. Sata said he could not see himself supporting the PF in the future, hence his resolve to ditch the party founded by his father for the second time.
But Zambian DNA spokesperson, Spuki Mulemwa said in as much as Mr Sata had a right to join a party of his choice, it was questionable why he had to abandon a party formed by his father at a time when it needed to be supported.
“What has he been promised where he is going, let him tell the nation because this is the second time he is ditching PF for UPND,” Mr Mulemwa said.
He said politics in Zambia had become a circus because it was all about greener pastures and not ideology.
Mr Mulemwa said if Mr Sata had truly earlier run away from UPND because of their ideology, there was no way he would find the party attractive now.
“He has the right to defect but the moral compass, where does he put the party which was started by his father,” he said.
When asked whether he was joining UPND because he was eyeing the Kabwata seat, Mr Sata said UPND was not short of candidates.
“These are politics. There will always be speculation. UPND has no shortage of credible candidates for that seat,” Mr Sata said.
