CANCER Diseases Hospital (CDH) has the capacity to deliver adequate health, as it is evident in the last 5 years the institution has managed to screen 4000 cervical cancer patients from across the country, says Minster of Health Chitalu Chilufya

The Ministry of Health had devised a Zambia national cancer control programme aimed at prevention, early detection through screening and early treatment of cancer diseases in the country.

Dr Chilufya said this during the tour of the Cancer Disease Hospital in Lusaka

“With the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), technical expertise has been provided to strengthen the nation’s cancer control programme and through that we have put in place control measures to reach out to our people in the communities on time,” said Chilufya.

“And with further support from the IAEA we have made progress in nuclear medicine where we had trained seven oncologist specialists and these are providing not only service but also teaching to increase the human resource,” he said.

Speaking at the same occasion IAEA Director General Dr. Yukiya Amano said cancer control was a priority for IAEA in developing countries.

He has assured the government of more support but highlighted that the Agency had its own challenges but would continue providing assistance through its expertise in nuclear medicine and radiation control.

He further, said that the Agency was willing to work with Government in the training of personnel.
