CONFUSION OVER FEES HITS NURSING COUNCIL

By MUKWIMA CHILALA
CONFUSION has characterised the General Nursing Council (GNC) membership renewal as nurses and midwives who wanted to pay K100 for the renewal of practicing certificates are being turned away on pretext that the council has not received any official communication on the reduction of the fees.
Health Minister Sylvia Masebo yesterday announced that Government has reduced the annual fees for renewal of practicing certificates for nurses and midwives from K378 to K100.
But a check yesterday at the GNC Secretariat found nurses who were trying to pay the new K100 fees being turned away on the pretext that the GNC were waiting for official directive from the government.
And some nurses who were found at the GNC but sought anonymity said the council has not yet effected the new fees as they were being charged K378 instead of K100.
And when reached for a comment, GNC legal counsel and spokesperson Etambuyu Mulele said they would issue a statement on the matter.
Meanwhile Biomedical Union of Zambia president Daniel Mwimbe has described as chaotic the reduction of the annual fees for renewal of practicing certificates for nurses and midwives by the government.
Mr Mwimbe says it is unfair the government only decided to reduce fees for nurses and midwives who are paying less than other health practitioners.
