THE Central Statistical Office (CSO) has appealed to households to facilitate the collection of data for the 2017 livestock census which is expected to start this January.

Director of Census and Statistics John Kalumbi said the census is expected to last for a month and that households should help the government and the ministry collect the data.

Speaking when he presented the December monthly bulletin held in Lusaka last Friday, Mr Kalumbi said training of all field staff is underway in provincial centres, adding that immediately after the training, the exercise will commence.

“We are soliciting for cooperation from selected households to facilitate the collection of data since this livestock census will provide the bench mark upon which future surveys will be conducted,” he said.

Mr Kalumbi said that after the census is completed it will form a basis for planning and policy formulation.

The census will cover all the districts and the focus will be on poultry, fish farming, honey production and livestock.

One of the objectives of this important event will be provide statistics which can be used to determine the deficit or surplus status of different types of livestock in the country and also to measure the gross value added and other indicators of the livestock subsector and its contribution to the economy.
