GOVERNMENT is committed to ensuring that the people have adequate access to clean and safe drinking water for the less privileged people, Minister of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection, Lloyd Kaziya, has said.

Speaking during the commissioning of Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company’s Kabanana water supply improvement project yesterday, Mr Kaziya said that the project was a reflection of the Government’s commitment to ensuring adequate access to clean and safe drinking water for the less privileged people in peri-urban areas.

The minister said that it was unacceptable that most people did not have adequate access to clean and safe drinking water.

“I am reliably informed that this project funded at a cost of 1.8 million will provide portable water to an estimated 22, 000 residents of Kabanana compound.

This will no doubt augment Governments’ efforts to reduce the risk and incidences of waterborne diseases which have ravaged our people for a long time,” he said.

He said that the project was a testimony of the effective water sector reforms in line with the Seventh National Development Plan and the Vision 2030 which are also complementing Government efforts towards attainment of sustainable Development Goal number six – water and sanitation.
