SIAVONGA is reeling under revelations of suspected Satanism and witchcraft with some youths found sleeping at the graveyard as part of a ritual to get rich.

Residents near and those passing by the graveyard have complained of unusual sounds and lights from the graveyards, a place that should not have such activity.

Some motorists have complained of sounds of chants and lights from the graveyard, which in is on a hill on  the entry to the tourist capital.

Residents interviewed by the Daily Nation suspect that the youths who have taken to sleeping at the graveyard think that it was a quick way to get rich.

“In a hurry to get rich quickly, some people especially the youths in Siavonga are said to have resorted to using charms and sleeping at the graveyard situated on Siavonga/Lusaka road,” revealed one resident.

Some motorists driving on the Siavonga highway late in the night have reported the presence of people and chants coming from the graveyard.

Residents have now called on government and the traditional authorities to act and bring those involved to book.

A concerned resident, Chimuka Mweene has told the Daily Nation that instead of working hard, some people in the area have resorted to seeking charms from traditional doctors and end up sleeping at the grave yards which he said was not only un Christian but also un Zambian.

He said recently three youths from Michol compound are reported to have slept at the cemetery and were only woken up by noise from the people who had gone to dig a grave for a deceased relative.

The grave diggers were shocked to find the three fast asleep on top of tombstones with charms collected from graves in their hands. He said one youth sent by one of the local businessmen suspected to be involved in satanism, to collect a crown from a white man’s grave ended up in hospital after he broke his arm as he was running away from the cemetery after he heard a voice coming from a creature asking him, “what do you want”. “We are not happy with what is happening here. Some young people who want to get rich quickly are sleeping at graveyards disturbing the dead. Let the authorities and the church come in and help resolve this issue because we are tired of this nonsense,” he complained.

Siavonga, home to Lake Kariba is associated with Satanism and several people in the underworld are said to be visiting the area to get power from the river god, the Nyaminyami.

Last year, a strange phenomenon allegedly happened on the lake where residents in both Siavonga and Kariba town in Zimbabwe woke up to a shock when they saw a narrow white line from lake ascending towards the sky.
