SOME residents of Lusaka’s Garden Chilulu area have expressed concern over having sleepless nights due to the noise and loud music played by bars operating beyond stipulated hours.

“We have been failing to sleep during these past few months because these bars have been making a lot of noise. I don’t understand why these bars are operating for such long hours,” one of the residents lamented.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, a Garden compound resident Mr Musiwa, said that some bars were operating on a 24-hour basis causing noise pollution in the area.

He charged that the bars were surrounded by houses and it was not good for them to operate throughout the night.

Another concerned resident, Grace Mwila, said that the illegal operations of the bars had also contributed to underage drinking as most children were now patronising drinking places.

Ms. Mwila said that children were exposed to longer hours of illicit activities, thereby prone to fall prey.

“Our children do not even have time to study in the night because the music in these bars play all night and it’s just not good for bars to operate on a 24-hour basis.

“One of my children has refused to continue with his Grade ten simply because he finds pleasure in beer drinking and he cannot think about anything else,” she said.

Ms. Mwila further appealed to the Lusaka City Council to ensure that sanity was restored in the area.
