Mukuka prods golf national team to perfect skills

By BENEDICT TEMBO ZAMBIA golf team coach Mukuka Mwango says playing against good players across the African continent has shown how much work needs to be put in by local golfers. Zambia secured bronze medal at the All Africa Team Championship in Tunisia, finishing third behind champions South Africa and silver medallists Morocco. South Africa ultimately finished with a team total of 624, edging out Morocco, who finished second with 628 while Zambia rounded out the podium in third place with a score of 646. The podium finish marked a proud achievement for Zambian golf and reflected the country’s growing ability to compete against Africa’s leading golfing nations. Led by Captain Blackwell Mwandila of Chilanga Golf Club, the team comprised Dominic Musonda, Gilbert Chalwe and Stalian Daka. Mwango said getting exposed to different courses tests the players’ skills and that shows them where their weakness is. “And as they travel back home they will work on them. The boys can be shooting great scores at home course competing with the same players and they will think they are good enough but playing in such tournaments and competing with good players across the continental will force you to work even hard,” he said. Mwango said the local golfers should spend more time practicing to perfect their trade. “Practice, practice, practice,” he emphasised. Meanwhile, Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) Secretary General Edward Phiri said Zambia’s achievement adds encouragement to the Union’s continued investment in coaching, equipment, training and international exposure through its high performance programme. “The bronze medal also strengthens the case for greater private sector support. Sustained investment will help develop emerging talent, improve preparations and give Zambian players more opportunities to compete internationally,” Phiri said Zambia left Tunisia yesterday among Africa’s top three teams, with a medal to celebrate and a strong foundation on which to build future success.
