…Expedite review of 1977 Sports Council Act

By GRACE CHAILE LESOETSA

THE ministry of Sport should ensure all sport associations participate in the review process of the 1977 Sports Council Act and not through backdoor mechanisms, says Handball Association of Zambia (HAZ) general secretary Josab Changa.

Changa said he was shocked that sports minister Moses Mawere could decide to delay further the appointment of the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) board pending the review of the Sports Council Act.

Mawere described the Act as ancient and needed urgent review to match modern trends in the sporting world.

But Changa said so much money had been spent in the last four to five years on the review process without a positive outcome.

“We hope this is not one way of the Ministry trying to run NSCZ. Why did the ministry allow over 40 associations to gather last April to appoint the seven board members when they knew that the Act was ancient?,

“They would have used the same 1977 Act to appoint the other five members and later begin the review process because we are in dire need of an operational NSCZ,” he said.

Changa challenged the minister to announce the time frame of the review process to allow associations to adequately prepare.

“The review process should be done quickly. I think by January, we should have a new document. I wish to challenge the ministry to involve all sports associations in the whole process.

“They should not organise themselves at some lodge and just present us with the document. It should represent the views of every association,” he charged.

Mawere has since nullified the election of the seven members elected to the board in April.
