DRC DELAYING TO END CONGESTION AT KASUMBALESA, SAYS COMMERCE MINISTER

By NAMO PHIRI

COMMERCE, Trade and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga says the congestion at Kasumbalesa border post does not have anything to do with the Zambian government and the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

Mr Mulenga said the challenge is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) side as there are internal issues which have not yet been resolved.

He said the Zambian government had a discussion with their Congolese counterparts to ensure that the border remains open for 24 hours but the border only remains open up to 20 hours from the DRC side.

Mr Mulenga said the government is doing everything possible to decongest the Kasumbalesa border post that is the reason it has opened Kipushi, Sakanya and Mukambo borders.

He said he was aware of the many challenges truck drivers at the border are facing and soon they will be addressed.

Mr Mulenga said the Ministry of Health had been engaged to ensure that health challenges are addressed.
