PEOPLE who do not agree with the majority Patriotic Front members that President Edgar Lungu is the preferred candidate in 2021 should wait for the convention, says former UPND deputy spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo.

Mr. Lifwekelo said Mr. Lungu, who is PF party president, was the preferred and not sole candidate of the ruling party contrary to what detractors assumed that the party would not go for a convention in 2020.

In an interview, he said anyone against the will of the majority PF members to see President Lungu continue after 2021 were enemies of progress owing to the development agenda he has embarked on for Zambia.

“Those that do not agree with the position taken by the majority of the members that President Lungu is the preferred candidate for PF in the 2021 presidential elections must wait for the convention in 2020,” he said.

Mr. Lifwekelo who once served as PF secretary general said a group of disgruntled PF members was against the leadership of the Head of State and that the party should weed out all detractors undermining his administration.

He said the so called senior leaders and founder members should not hold the party hostage as the PF was bigger than any individual.

Mr. Lifwekelo said for now President Lungu was the preferred candidate for the PF in 2021 and that was the party’s choice.

He said Mr. Lungu said he was available and that if the PF wanted him to continue after 2021, they would be guided accordingly when that time came.

Mr. Lifwekelo said the role of senior and all PF members was to unite and build the party and not destroy it but that it was unfortunate that some senior members had become the mouth piece of the opposition.
