M’MEMBE IN COURT ALLEGEDLY DEFAMING DEPUTY POLICE IG

SOCIALIST Party President Fred M’membe yesterday appeared at the Lusaka Magistrate Court for the charge of libel.

Mr M’membe, however, failed to take plea because the charge sheet was not before the court.

M’membe was accompanied by his lawyers, a group of supporters who surrounded the court premises cheering him, chanting his name and demonstrating his party symbol.

But after being informed that his charge was not ready before the court, Mr. Mmembe was told to come back on August 29, 2023 for plea.

Police on August 8, 2023 arrested Mr M’membe and charged him with libel contrary to section 191 chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.Allegations are that on June 6, 2023, Mr. M’membe authored an article in which he allegedly defamed Deputy Inspector General of police for Operations Milner Muyambango.

In a statement issued by Police, Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga said Mr M’membe is also charged with communication of certain information.Mr Hamoonga said it is alleged that on June 6, 2023 with intent to defame, published an article on social media that Mr Muyambango refused to obey instruction 

by Solicitor General Marshal Muchende to reinstate a named recently deceased police officer on payroll. He said Mr M’membe allegedly also published on social media that the named police officer died of depression as the result of the resistance by Mr. Muyambango to reinstate him on the payroll
