NEVERS Mumba must write to us over the unpaid legal fees he incurred while he was party president or we will treat it as a personal debt which he will have to pay himself, MMD chairperson for transport communications James Chona has said.

Commenting on Dr. Mumba’s directive to the bailiffs who pounced on him last Thursday to demand for unpaid legal fees accumulated in 2013 Mr Chona said that they needed to rehearse with the secretariat.

Mr. Chona said the MMD was grateful to Dr. Mumba for his recognition of a legitimate body in the MMD but said the party would not be excited to pay the bill until he swallowed his pride and wrote to the secretariat over his presidency.

He said paying over K100, 000 in outstanding legal fees to George Kunda & Company over Dr. Mumba’s contempt of court case was not an issue but that the party expected the former leader to sober up, own up, and write to the secretariat over the matter rather than just making oral and vague statements over the matter to elude punishment but still continue to claim the presidency.

He said the MMD was a corporate entity which was obliged to settle debts incurred by the previous leadership, adding that the party was grateful that Dr. Mumba had recognised the leadership in place but added that as long as he did not make official communication to the party over the matter, the party will continue to treating the debt as personal and that Dr. Mumba will have to offset it.

“There is no dispute that all debts accrued by the previous leadership are to be settled by the party and we are grateful that when Dr. Mumba was faced with the predicament of having to pay the legal firm, he acknowledged that there is a legitimate leadership in place which should pay as he is no longer in  the party leadership.

He said the party will accord Dr. Mumba the same respect it had for former party leaders if he stopped his antagonistic antics by acknowledging the new leadership.

On Thursday morning, Dr. Mumba is said to have denied being MMD president after bailiffs pounced on him on a matter of outstanding legal fees in the contempt of court case in the Supreme Court in 2013.

He is believed to owe George Kunda & Company about K107, 000.00 and when bailiffs went to his house, he referred them to party national secretary Mr. Raphael Nakacinda saying he was not liable since he was no longer president.
