UN HAILS ZAMBIA’S PEACE

THE United Nations (UN) has said it counts on Zambia’s active engagement and contribution in building a stronger UN and has called on the country to continue with its efforts of advancing peace, development and human rights for all.

UN Secretary General António Guterres has said while humanity is living in a time of great promise, the world is still faced with deep insecurity.

In a congratulatory letter to President Edgar Lungu, on the country’s 53rd Independence Anniversary, Mr Guterres said the UN as a human global family is striving for dignity, justice, progress and prosperity.

Mr Guterres said dignity, justice, progress and prosperity among nations depended on peace, noting that the values, which are binding nations together are enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

The UN secretary general stated that he began the year 2017 by issuing an appeal to nations for peace around the world.

Mr Guterres said in celebrating Zambia’s 53rd Independence Anniversary, he is familiar with the fact that at a time of growing divisions around the world, the diversity of the United Nations is “strengthening our common work and affirms our common humanity.”

“I am pleased to extend my warmest congratulations to the Government and people of the Republic of Zambia on the occasion of the National Holiday. We are living through a time of great promise, but also deep insecurity. All that we strive for as a human family dignity, justice, progress and prosperity depend on peace.

“As you mark this special day, I count on your country’s active engagement and contribution to help build a stronger United Nations and advance our shared efforts to ensure peace, development and human rights for all,” Mr Guterres said.

October 24th is also Day of the United Nations and Zambia decided to settle for this date for its independence as a tribute to the UN.
