ENSURE equal jobs for all citizens regardless of their status, Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS, Executive Director Charity Mwape has said.

Ms Mwape has advised the private sector to ensure equal job opportunity for all citizens.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Ms Mwape expressed concern that some organizations in the private sector still discriminated against people that tested positive.

Ms Mwape however, said that government institutions were doing a commendable job in trying to eliminate stigma and discrimination in work places.

“I would like to thank the government for improving on the standards and lowering the levels of stigma and discrimination.

“The only area where we still have a challenge is in the private sector where people that are living with HIV/AIDS are not accorded the same opportunities as those that are negative. We hope that this changes,” she said.

Ms Mwape said that it was important that people that were positive are treated like any other worker.

She said that her organization had not given up on the fight against HIV/AIDS through awareness programmes across the country.

“My organization has been conducting awareness programmes to educate people about HIV/AIDS and I must say that the response is quite good, people’s mindsets are changing and they are beginning to accept and embrace those that are living a positive life,” she said.

Ms Mwape said that every person was either infected or affected and that was reason enough to treat workers equally in the work place.
