CHONGWE Municipal Council has been officially invited to attend the official handover of 42 Fire-tenders at the Lusaka’s Show Grounds on the 13th September 2017, The Town Clerk has disclosed.

The Town Clerk, Mr. Levis Mumba said that the council was invited to witness the official handover of the Fire-tenders by President Edgar Lungu to the Minister of Local Government who will in turn handover the tenders to various councils across the country at undisclosed dates.

He did not hide the fact that the council was hoping to receive at least one fire tender as the council relies on a very small machine that cannot contain a major fire such as the one which engulfed a dormitory at Chalimbana University in April this year.

The Chief Fire officer, Mr. Joseph Muchimba was even more hopeful and was almost sure that Chongwe Municipal Council would definitely have a share of the fire-tenders.

Mr Muchimba said these were fit-for-purpose machines which were brand new and had two compartments, one of 6, 000 water capacity and the other of 2, 000 foam capacity (used to quench fuel fires).

Chongwe has had challenges in putting out fires for a long time and it is hoped that these fire-tenders would not pass them by as the Chongwe Fire Brigade watch helplessly. One resident who sought anonymity said, “Our fire men are like soldiers without guns.”
