EXPEDITE CONCOURT RULING ON FATE OF MP’S – MWANZA

BY SILUMESI MALUMO

GOVERNANCE activist, Isaac Mwanza, says it will be prudent for the Constitutional Court to expedite the interpretation of the law regarding the expelled Patriotic Front Members of Parliament.

He said  the outcome from the Concourt would be taken as gospel truth by all Zambians.

Mr Mwanza indicated that as things stood, people were in the dark following the decision of the Speaker of National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, to suspend lawmakers who had appealed nullification of their seats.

In an interview, Mr Mwanza said the law was very clear on such matters, but a precedence had been set by the Speaker by suspending the lawmakers challenging who had appealed the High Court judgment.

Mr Mwanza said it would be prudent to   put the matter to bed so that everyone could have the knowledge of what the law stated.

The law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has also petitioned the Concourt seeking an interpretation of articles which the Speaker used to expel the MPs from taking part in Parliamentary business.

The Speaker in her ruling indicated that all those whose seats were nullified will not participate in the Parliamentary business.

And Mr Mwanza stated that the hope of many Zambians now was on the Concourt ruling.

“Now that the Speaker acted in such a manner, we are hoping that that the Constitutional Court will look into this matter with sense of emergency, because the lawmakers are waiting to hear from its ruling so that the dust can be settled,’’ he said.
