ZBF hails successful 2021

By MICHAEL MIYOBA
THE Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) has described the 2021 boxing season as a success despite having been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In an interview, ZBF president Dan Chiteule said the federation has recorded a number of positives since he won the ZBF elections held in May this year.
Chiteule believes the future of boxing is bright because of the positives recorded by young boxers at the Tokyo Olympic Games and the Under 20 games were the boxing team won three gold medals and two silver medals in Maseru, Lesotho.
“It has been a success story. We only came in office in May and we are probably six months in office. I would say it is a success story because our boys performed very well at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. They went up to second round and looking at the competition they faced while still young, they have a bright future.
“Apart from the Olympics, the other success story is the under-20 games in Maseru. We hope to pick it up from there as we go into the New Year,” Chiteule said.
“The Covid-19 really disturbed us we just came into office and the pandemic was on us but we managed to camp the boys who went to Tokyo under very difficult circumstances, even the under-20 that went to Lesotho it was tough but we had to adhere to government guidelines they had put in place hoping that there was no Covid I’m sure we were going to do even much better.”
Chiteule said the ZBF executive will soon meet to plan for the boxing calendar and international tournaments such as the Birmingham games scheduled for next year.
He hailed the government for always being there to support the growth of boxing in the country.
