DEC arrests 2 men with US$215,000 counterfeit notes

THE Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Lusaka has arrested a 36 year-old Ugandan national and a Zambian for being in possession of over U$S79, 500 and US$135,00 counterfeit notes rspectively.

Isa Mutebi, a Ugandan businessman of House No. 12 Kamwala in Lusaka was arrested after he was found with U$S79, 500 counterfeit notes in the Central Business District of Lusaka.

DEC public relations officer Theresa Katongo confirmed the arrest to Daily Nation in a statement yesterday.

She said also said DEC arrested Dyson Mtonga, 48, a bricklayer of Kamwala South in Lusaka for being in possession of U$S135, 000 counterfeit notes in U$S100 bills.

Ms Katongo said the Commission had in other parts of the Zambia arrested 20 small scale farmers for unlawful cultivation and trafficking in cannabis.

“Those arrested include Richard Chanda, 36, of Chafoma village in Muchinga Province for unlawful cultivation of 600kg of fresh cannabis plants and Juliet Kalale, 36, a small scale farmer of Chisenga village in Serenje district for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 422kg.

“And the Mongu Magistrates Court under Mr Julius Malata has convicted Sitali Likando, 46, a small scale farmer of Njoko area in Mulobezi District to 5 years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from 10th April, , for cultivating cannabis plants” she said.

Ms Katongo said the suspect was arrested by the Commission on April 9,  after he was found with fresh cannabis weighing 527kg and trafficking in 71kg of loose cannabis.
