1 DEAD, ANOTHER INJURED IN LUBAMBE MINE ACCIDENT

A 58-YEAR-OLD Grader Operator at Lubambe Copper Mines (LCM) in Chililabombwe has died on the spot, while a tipper truck driver he was with is unconscious after a truck they were in, flipped off the road while trying to dump waste it carried from the mine to the dumping site.
Copperbelt Province Police acting Deputy Police Commissioner Tresphord Kasale confirmed the incident which happened on Monday around 11:00 hours at the mine’s tailing dam and identified the victim as Mr Osward Mwansa of Nchanga North in Chingola.
Mr Kasale said LCM Mine Manager Chibuye Chisi, 33, reported that Mr Mwansa died on the spot after the vehicle, a tipper truck registration number ACT 678 he was in flipped off the road as it tried to dump waste it carried from the mine to the dumping site.
He said Mr James Mukonko, who was driving the tipper survived the accident, but was admitted at Konkola Mine Hospital.
“Yes, I can confirm that we had a report of an accident in which a 58-year-old grader operator at LCM Osward Mwansa died on the spot, while the driver he was with is unconscious after a tipper truck they were in flipped off the road while trying to dump waste it carried from the mine to the dumping site,” Mr Kasale said.
Mr Kasale said Mr Mwansa, who was a grader operator was on the material day assigned to work as a spotter whose responsibility was to give signal to the driver as he was dumping his waste at the dumpsite.
He said the Police visited the accident scene and revealed that Mr Mwansa and Mr Mukonko were both in the truck when the accident happened.
“Mr Mwansa’s body was found with no visible injuries and was taken to Konkola Mine Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial, while an inquiry had been opened to investigate the matter to ascertain the cause of the accident,” Mr Kasale said.
