NKANA Water and Sewerage Company in Kitwe on the Copperbelt has attributed the rampant vandalism of its facilities such as pipes and man-hole covers to persistent sewer blockages.

Speaking in an interview with Daily nation yesterday the residents complained that they were tired of the constant leakage of sewer lines and have since appealed to Nkana water and Sewerage Company to repair the pipes.

The residents expressed fears of a disease outbreak especially that cholera cases were on the upswing.

The residents said the water utility firm is aware of the problem but nothing tangible is being done to correct the situation.

“These leakage happen on regular basis and it has become tiresome to report the issues and we want a permanent solution so that the leaking of sewer can stop,’ the residents complained.

But Nkana Water and sewerage Company Public Relations Manager, Bivan Saluseki, says the company is aware of the problem and temporary works are being done to rectify the matter.

Mr Saluseki said the company has some priority works in Buchi Township where one case of Cholera was reported and works are currently underway.

Mr Saluseki however blamed residents in the area in the habit of throwing litter in the opened man-holes.

“The problem we have is most of our lines have been vandalized and some man-hole covers have either been vandalized or stolen and that allows sand to enter and people are throwing all sorts of things in the lines causing the blockages” said Saluseki.
