YOUTH Aid has bemoaned the second inferno that burnt Lusaka City Market on Saturday barely six months when one part of trading centre went up in flames.

Organisation chairperson Kachenga Chungu said the suspected act of arson was unfortunate as the market was a source of livelihood for thousands of marketeers.  He said it was believed that the fire gutted the market around 01:00.

Mr Kachenga called on security wings to guard the market because this was the second time that fire had gutted the market in short space of time. He said marketeers had suffered untold misery and business loses.

“It is unfortunate that people have been made to remember the last fire through this act of suspected arson. People have suffered and he hoped God could expose all behind this acts.

“People have suffered long enough the market was their source of livelihood after their families,” complained one of the traders to Mr Kachenga as he offered solidarity and words of comfort to some of the traders.

Youth Aid is appealing to all well-wishers and the business community to reach out to the affected traders and thanked the fire department for their quick action to stop further damage.

“I appeal to the opposition and the government to partner and help those affected as this is a national calamity and therefore everyone should be involved, it’s not only the government’s burden but it’s for all of us.”
