THE Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) says the newly launched newspaper currently vending on the streets named ‘The Mast’ is an illegal publication as it is operating without tax registration. According to ZRA corporate communications manager, Oliver Nzala, The Mast newspaper as far as the Authority was concerned, was an illegal publication as it operated without registration for taxes.

“This comes after a search on the ZRA TaxOnline system which revealed that the newly launched newspaper called The Mast is not registered for taxes. Without registration for taxes, The Mast Newspaper is an illegal publication,” he said.

Mr Nzala said ZRA would not allow individuals and business to evade tax at liberty because such acts defrauded the national treasury.   Mr Nzala had since warned the newspaper for operating without tax registration. He said the Authority strongly warned all business entities that were not registered for tax to do so in order to be on the safe side with the laws of the land that related to tax.   “Businesses operating without tax registration are encouraged to visit any ZRA office across the country and get guidance on how to get registered.

“The Income Tax Act Cap 323 of the Laws of Zambia requires anyone in receipt of an income to register with the Zambia Revenue Authority,” he said. The Mast newspaper was launched last week soon after a privately owned Post Newspaper was placed under liquidation.
