Stop demonizing past leaders – Mtayachalo

PAST leaders should be appreciated and not demonized as the trend has been because they
have contributed to the economic growth of the country, Yotam Mtayachalo has advised.
Mr Mtayachalo the Patriotic Front (PF) Chama North Member of Parliament (MP) said
demonizing past leaders would continue if the country did not cultivate the culture of
appreciating past leaders for their contribution to the development of the country.
He said in an interview that the country had managed to come out of the electricity crisis
because of the massive investment in the Kafue Gorge Lower Power Project that the MMD
under the late Rupiah Banda administration commissioned and accelerated by the PF under
former President Edger Lungu
Mr Mtayachalo said the country has had a stable electricity supply in 2022 despite the current
load shedding as a result of the low water levels at the Kariba North Bank Power stations and
this was due to the massive investment in the 750 megawatts Kafue Gorge Lower power
station.
“The energy sector particularly the electricity sub sector has performed well in 2022 although
the country experienced load shedding and this is because of the 750 megawatts major
investments in the Kafue Gorge Lower power station accelerated by the PF,” Mr Mtayachalo
said.
Mr Mtayachalo has however said the petroleum sector has not performed well because of the
war in Russia and Ukraine and this has increased the cost of living and doing business and the
price of fuel was expected to skyrocket with the removal of customs and import duty on
petroleum products.
He said the situation calls for continued investment in power generation both in renewable and
non-renewable energy.
