THE lawlessness that is happening on public roads following the suspension of some roadblocks and check points, will not be tolerated and those found wanting with face the full wrath of the law, Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister Jack Mwiimbu has warned.
Mr Mwiimbu has since urged traffic officers to enhance motorised traffic patrols, speed management and control of traffic at busy points.
Mr Mwiimbu said the abolishment of traffic snap check points and maintaining only security check points, did not imply tolerating lawlessness on public roads.
He said officers should ensure that they stop any motorist suspected to have committed an offence and charge them accordingly.
He said the ministry has observed that the public and motorists are bullying and attacking traffic police officers for ensuring sanity on public roads.
Mr Mwiimbu advised that the public and motorists should note that traffic police officers have a constitutional duty to make sure that public safety is not compromised on public roads
The minister appealed to the traffic unit working in conjunction with other stake holders such as the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) to continue policing public roads for the safety of the travellers and the general public.
“It has come to the attention of the ministry that motor vehicles that are not road worthy, unlicensed drivers, and lawlessness on public roads have become a major public concern, therefore, the traffic unit should make sure that traffic regulations are enforced to protect the citizens and continue policing public roads for the safety of the travelling masses and the general public,” said Mr Mwiimbu.
