THE K230 million that Government has set aside for the procurement of equipment for practical lessons in secondary schools will yield positive results because learners will be able to gain relevant survival skills once they left school, Secondary Education Teachers Union of Zambia (SESTUZ) has said.

SESTUZ president Setibekiso Wamuyuba said the decision by Government to secure funds to purchase equipment for practical subjects was a good move because it will improve the performance of pupils, especially in secondary schools.

Mr Wamuyuba said that pupils faced major challenges as regards practical subjects and mathematical-related subjects, leading to poor performance.

“There has been major problems when it comes to mathematics and practical subjects simply because schools were not stocked with equipment to use in that regard,” he said.

Government has spent over K230 million to procure various learning equipment for practical subjects to be distributed to schools across the country.

General Education minister Dennis Wanchinga said the equipment was meant to support the implementation of the revised education curriculum framework.

Dr Wanchinga said his ministry had embarked on an extensive review of the old curriculum in 2014 because many learners in school were not being taught enough to suit the current learning trends.

And director of standards Cecilia Sakala said that the equipment will be distributed to 5O schools across the country.
