Probe ZIALE programme – Shimunza

By KETRA KALUNGA
IT will be an act of extreme injustice to allow the 99.9% failure rate at Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Institute to stand, Movement for National Transformation (MNT) founding President, Daniel Shimunza has said.
Dr Shimunza has called for a probe because it was shameful to the country and shouldn’t be allowed to continue.
He said the programme should be probed because something was fundamentally wrong with it as the pass rate has remained poor for a long time.
He said the recent results should not be allowed to stand or continue in the future because it defied logic and good academic planning.
He said in an interview that much as the standard of legal training should be kept high, the bar examinations shouldn’t become a filter for people who can contribute to the legal fraternity in the country.
Dr. Shimunza said the bar examinations shouldn’t rob the country of lawyers needed to meet the increasing demand for legal services.
“Ongoing reforms are required, something is fundamentally wrong in the programme at ZIALE between the lecturers and the students. It seems there’s a gap between the lecturers and the students in as far as the transmission of the practical expression of the exams is concerned,” he said.
Dr. Shimunza said there is need to reintegrate new ideas on how ZIALE could become more relevant to the needs of society and at the same time ensure that the standard of legal training for legal practitioners is kept high.
