Victorious netballers promised ‘ka sonething’

GOVERNMENT says it will reward the Zambia national netball team for making the country proud and winning Zambia’s maiden Africa Netball Cup after edging Namibia 57-55 in the final played on Wednesday in Botswana.

Ministry of Sports, Youth and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe said Government was delighted to see the netball team make history by bringing home gold after impressing at the tournament.

Kangwa noted that apart from rewarding the netball team, Government through the National Sports Council will host the netball team to a dinner date to celebrate their achievement. 

“Netball you have now put yourself in a special class and a special category. I think and I’m very convinced that through my minister honourable Elvis Nkandu, that our players, our technical team shall be rewarded and rewarded accordingly for this great achievement,” Kangwa said.

“Our president has declared that there are no minor sports, there are major sports in Zambia so we appreciate the netball team and we shall reward them for this great gesture and honour that they have brought to our country,” he added

Kangwa said the netball team’s success in Botswana has placed the team in a class which will make it easy for them to receive funding.

Meanwhile, Netball Zambia president Martha Sichone hailed the government and sponsors such as Atlasmara and Vedanta for giving the team the support which enabled them to succeed in Botswana.

Sichone also hailed the Netball Zambia executive and the technical bench led by 26-year-old Lazarus Tembo for working tirelessly to bring the Netball Africa Cup to Zambia.
