JAIL unscrupulous individuals who are spreading falsehoods that President Edgar Lungu is not eligible to contest the 2021 elections because the constitutional court already ruled that he qualifies, a consortium of political parties has demanded.

Consortium spokesperson, Spuki Mulemwa said it was contempt of court for anyone to undermine the decision of the court.
Mr Mulemwa said the ConCourt already ruled that President Lungu was eligible to contest the 2021 elections because he had only served one term.
“This is clear contempt of court, these individuals must be jailed immediately,” he said.
And the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) president Mr Andrew Ntewewe said the Constitutional Court must take punitive action against those undermining its ruling on the eligibility of President Edgar Lungu and want to waste its time by petitioning.
He said that the ConCourt should not entertain time wasters but ensure that punitive action was taken to stop the drama on President Lungu’s eligibility.
“The eligibility of the President is a well settled matter,” he said.
Mr Ntewewe said the punitive action would be the only way to handle individuals who had been denouncing the ConCourt ruling.
“It is unfortunate that even learned senior lawyers can sink so low as to argue the ConCourt judgement,” he said.
In a statement, president of the Constitutional Court Justice Hilda Chibomba said the court had already made judgement on President Lungu’s eligibility which could be accessed as it was in public domain.
This was after the Daily Nation wrote to the Constitutional Court, seeking “much clearer” interpretation of its judgement on the eligibility of President Lungu to stand in the 2021 Presidential and general elections.
Justice Chibomba urged Zambians to read the judgement on the head of State’s eligibility to stand in 2021 because the matter was conclusively disposed-of.
“As regards the judgement that you have made reference to in your letter, kindly be advised that the same was delivered by the court and it can be easily accessed as it is in public domain. I can only urge you to read it,” Justice Chibomba said.
UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma however said the party would not accept that President Lungu was eligible to contest the 2021 general elections because the Constitutional Court did not mention his name.
