THE highly anticipated rally by UPND in Kitwe yesterday failed to take off after being advised to not go ahead because it clashed with that of PF. Both the PF and the United Party for National Development (UPND) had applied for notifications to hold public meetings in Kitwe yesterday at the same venue and time.

Police summoned both parties for a meeting where it was resolved that the UPND rally should not go ahead.

UPND Copperbelt secretary Mr P. Muyaba and his vice Mr. M.K Muletambo had requested to hold a rally to thank its supporters for voting for them during the August 11, 2016 general elections.

According to a notification given to the police, UPND leaders Hakainde Hichilema, Geoffrey Mwamba, Mutale Nalumango were supposed to address the planned rally.

The rally was supposed to be held at Changanamai grounds in Kwacha East from 10:00 hours to 19:00 hours.

But according to the Copperbelt police commissioner Charity Katanga, both camps later resolved that the UPND rally be halted while the PF goes ahead with an indoor meeting in Buchi Township.

The Copperbelt police chief clarified to Sunday Nation yesterday that the two political parties resolved that the UPND rally be halted.

“The decision was settled by politicians themselves.

“The police called both the PF and the UPND for a meeting and resolved that a rally for the UPND should not take place,” Ms. Katanga said.

Ms. Katanga said the PF decided to hold indoor meeting in Buchi as agreed with their UPND counterparts.

“The UPND said they will not go ahead with their meeting and that if they intend to have it at later date they will inform the
police,” she said.
