THE African Development Bank (AfDB) has sponsored about 220 students at Nkumbi International College in Mkushi in various disciplines.

Nkumbi ward councillor Lewis Mayuya said the sponsorship would cater for all college requirements for the period of two years.

In an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday Mr Mayuya said the bank had displayed the spirit of good public private partnership (PPP) with government in promoting education for all.

He said the banking institution was implementing corporate social responsibility by ploughing back to the community.

“I am very happy with the gesture put across by the African Development Bank. I also want to commend the AfDB management for the financial help rendered to students, without which their education vpild have ended due to financial woes,” said Mr Mayuya

Mr Mayuya said the move by bank would go a long way in securing  a good future for the sponsored students.

Mr. Mayuya has since appealed to other financial institutions to emulate AfDB so as to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor as regard access to quality education.

Mr. Mayuya also revealed that government had also sponsored 86 students through bursaries at the same college describing it as a great achievement in the education sector.

Mr. Mayuya said that the move by government was timely and in the right direction in promoting education for all.

He said government had demonstrated good leadership and that it cared for the education sector which it wished to grow to greater heights.
