THE Lusaka fast track court last month convicted 12 people for driving under the influence of alcohol, Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) public relations manager Mukela Mangolwa has said.

In an update statement to the Daily Nation on last month’s road traffic offences, Mr. Mangolwa said a total of 12 people were convicted in the Lusaka Fast Track Court for traffic offences and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Mr Mangolwa said the agency will continue to target drunk driving, excessive speeding, use of mobile phones whilst driving and failure to use the seat belt in its enforcement and education campaigns.

He emphasised on the need for drivers to ensure that they adhered to use of seat belts and car safety gadgets for children to safeguard lives.

He noted that dangerous driving was the most prevalent offence recorded by the court which accounted for 36 cases out of the 173 convictions in January.

Mr Mangolwa also said some individuals also appeared for multiple offences resulting in a total number of 139 offences out of which the agency secured 173 convictions.

“Other convictions were for unlicensed driving with 18 convictions, 14 convictions for expired test certificate, 13 for expired certificate of fitness, and 13 for use of uninsured motor vehicle, 18 for unlicensed drivers and six for use of handheld mobile phone whilst driving,” said Mr Mangolwa.
