HE Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has targeted to regulate 2,400 tools from various sectors of the industry in 2017 from the 2,124 standardised last year, says bureau head of marketing and public relations Hazel Zulu.

Ms Zulu said the targeted number of instruments was in a bid to promote accurate measurements, enhance industrial efficiency and increase productivity which would result in economic growth.

“Standardisation is a quality assurance activity that ensures that industry can safely and reliably use instruments to get the accurate measurement results they need in industrial production which can result in improved efficiency and productivity,” she said. Ms Zulu said in a statement that the bureau standardised 2,124 instruments in 2016, slightly higher than the 2,006 instruments regulated in 2015.

She explained that ZABS was able to regulate instruments such as scales, weight sets, gauge blocks, micrometres, dial indicators and measuring tapes.

She said others included multi-meters, resistors, pressure gauges, volumetric measures, ovens, cold rooms, liquid in glass thermometers, as well as radiation and digital thermometers.

Ms Zulu appealed to the industry to ensure that their instruments used in production or other use that required known values were periodically checked.

“We would also like to encourage more companies this year including private and public hospitals to seize this opportunity to enhance their service delivery and contribute to economic development,” she said.
