THE Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) has clarified that only selected parts of Matero Township had on erratic water supply due to maintenance works on broken water pipes.

LWSC spokesperson, Patson Phiri said as a result the water utility firm had shut down the supply line to the affected areas to allow for maintenance works.

He said this was contrary to claims by some residents in the Township that the entire area had a water crisis two weeks ago.

Mr Phiri made the remarks on Tuesday when he featured on Millennium Radio’s I heard segment.

“It is not true that the entire Matero Township has no water. The truth of the matter is that only a few places had water interruptions and we communicated to residents in those areas through SMS notifications,” Mr Phiri said

Mr Phiri also advised residents to utilise water tanks placed in various townships in the city.

Government has since installed water tanks in the cholera affected townships in Lusaka, among them Matero, Chipata, Chawama and Lilanda.

With the help of the Lusaka City Council, the corporate world and individuals, Government, through the Ministry of Health, came up with short-term measures to try and save people’s lives.

These included burying shallow wells and installation of water tanks in the affected townships from which the residents could, for free, draw clean and safe water to drink and for household purposes.
