THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has not banned political rallies as it is being reported in some sections of the media, Corporate Affairs Manager Patricia Luhanga has said.
Ms Luhanga said contrary to suggestions that political rallies had been banned, ECZ was merely discouraging large political gatherings in the face of Covid-19.
She said it was unfortunate that some stakeholders were deliberately trying to mislead the public despite knowing the truth.
“We had a meeting with political parties and the ECZ was very clear about this issue of political parties to avoid rallies where they can in the advent of the Covid-19,” Ms Luhanga said.
Ms Luhanga said political parties welcomed the move to discourage political rallies and only called for fairness.
Ms Luhanga said it was disappointing that the issue was being blown out of proportion.
There had been misconception that ECZ had banned political rallies ahead of the August 12, 2021 general elections.
