NO WITCH-HUNT IN GRAFT CASES – TIZ

By PETER SICHALI
THERE should be no witch-hunt and vindictiveness as the new government works to recover suspected stolen public funds, Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) Executive Director Maurice Nyambe has said.
Mr Nyambe said TIZ did not expect the fight against corruption to be vindictive or used to settle political scores.
He said the government should allow law enforcement agencies latitude to conduct independent investigations.
“We expect that law enforcement agencies will be given the latitude to conduct independent investigations on the basis of which follow up actions will take place,” Mr Nyambe said.
He said law enforcers and other investigative wings should be allowed to work without any interference.
“We do not expect interference in institutions of governance or law enforcement that had become a hallmark of the previous regime,” he said.
Mr Nyambe said TIZ expected the UPND government to adopt a strong stance against corruption and to ensure that any public funds that could have been stolen under the previous regime were recovered.
