MAMBO BACKS SANGWA ON ADVERTISING CJ POSITION

By GIDEON NYENDWA
A GORVONANCE activist has joined lawyers supporting state Counsel, John Sangwa’s suggestion that the position of Chief Justice should be advertised to allow for engagement of a competent person.

Former Civil society for Constitution Agenda (CiSCA) Board Chairperson Bishop John Hard Mambo said yesterday that Mr Sangwa’s suggestion that the position for chief justice should be advertised would give Zambia an opportunity to have a chief justice that will be right for the position because people who feel qualified will put forward their names.
Bishop Mambo, who is also a traditional leader, said Zambia has had wrong people in the key positions because most of the people were being handpicked.

“A lot of creative minds in the law fraternity will come forward and recommendations will be made,” he said.
There is nothing wrong with the suggestion that was made by state counsel John Sangwa who suggested that the position for chief justice should be advertised to make it transparent as the final authority to appoint would remain with the President, after security recommendations by the judicial commission.

He said there is no need for people to start demonising someone for giving a suggestion that is progressive.

Bishop Mambo said what Mr Sangwa was suggesting is working well in western countries and even South Africa.
He said Zambia should follow what is happening in other countries and learn from what has been achieved.

Bishop Mambo considers that will be the first step in reforming the judicial systems that the country has because what comes out of those courts affects everyone in the country.
