Proposed salary upgrades excite teachers

By KETRA KALUNGA

UPGRADING teachers in their rightful salary scales is commendable because this is something they have been waiting for years to receive, the National Action for Quality Education (NAQEZ) has said.

And NAQEZ says the reversal of teachers transferred on political grounds is welcome and the government should be commended for correcting the situation.

NAQEZ Executive Director, Aaron Chansa said in an interview that the upgrading of 10, 000 teachers’ salary scales to match their qualifications shows government’s commitment to delivering quality education.

Mr. Chansa said that delay to upgrade salaries for teachers who upgrade their qualification was a great source of demotivation.

He said the pronouncement once actualised would motivate teachers to perform better to the benefit of learners and the education system would ultimately improve.

“It’s long overdue. We appeal to the treasury to quickly actualise the commitment, teachers are anxious, we want to see them happy and we want to see them motivated,” he said.

And Mr. Chansa said the reversal of transfers for teachers perceived to be partisan was welcome and should be actualised soon because it was an injustice which needed to be corrected.

His remarks comes after government announced that it would ensure that the over 10, 000 teachers who had upgraded their academic qualifications to degree level get elevated to their relevant salary scales.

Minister of Education Douglas Siakalima said this will be done working with the Teaching Service Commission.
