Non-performing CB teachers face chop – PS

HEAD teachers on the Copperbelt have directed to get rid of non-performing teachers who spend most of their time in shopping malls.

The directive was issued in Kitwe at the weekend by provincial permanent secretary Mr Elias Kamanga who said because of that conduct, examination results for Grades 9 and 12 had remained poor in the last three years.

“It is disheartening to find that many teachers are frequenting shopping malls when they are supposed to be in classrooms imparting knowledge to their pupils; then you ask what time do they teach?” said Mr Kamanga.

The permanent secretary called on head teachers to take their supervisory role seriously by ensuring that teachers were kept in classrooms.

Speaking on Friday at the Copperbelt University (CBU) during a meeting to review the performance of pupils in Grades 9 and 12 exams the for the past three years, Mr Kamanga challenged head teachers to closely monitor the movement of teachers.

Mr Kamanga said head teachers have a significant role to play in ensuring that they closely monitored the movement of teachers because most of them were spending their time in shopping malls instead of classrooms.

He was saddened that despite Government investing massively in the education sector, exam results have continued to be poor especially in Kitwe.

“It is disheartening that instead of teaching, many teachers spent most of their time frequenting shopping malls. I am not happy with this kind of results the province is giving out for the past three years.

The permanent secretary said there was need for head teachers to get tough and ensure that there was a change in the prevailing state of affairs.

“We can’t sit by and watch the province continue to record these poor results. The performance for the past three years really shows that something is wrong somewhere and it needs to be worked on; we will not just sit and watch.

“Even after seeing it fit for you that we improve your working conditions, you still can’t supplement our efforts, but when we go out there we are seeing many of you buying expensive vehicles after we improved your working conditions,’’ he said.
