Environment protection measures set out

GOVERNMENT has initiated sufficient measures tailored to protecting the environment and natural resources in the country, Minister of Water Development, Sanitation and Environmental Protection, Lloyd Kaziya has disclosed.

And Kabwata PF MP, Given Lubinda, stressed the need for improved public awareness and participation in the management of environment in Zambia.

Mr Kaziya said appropriate policies, programmes and legal frameworks had been initiated to guide the environment sector.

“These include the National Policy on Environment of 2007, National Policy of Climate Change of 2016, and Environmental Management Act of 2011 and various sectoral legislation and policies that have been bearing on the environment.”

Mr Kaziya was speaking during the 2017 Environmental and Climate change Awards Ceremony held at Government Complex in Lusaka on Thursday.

Mr Kaziya however explained that regulating the environment required strong partnerships with all stakeholders.

“We must all take an individual responsibility towards environmental management. For example, we can change our consumption patterns towards goods and services without compromising the quality of life,” said Mr Kaziya.

And Kabwata PF MP, Given Lubinda, said there was need for improved public awareness and participation in the management of environment in Zambia.

Mr Lubinda, who is also Minister of Justice, appealed to the people of Zambia to do more in protecting the environment and natural resources.

Meanwhile, Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) Director General, John Msimuko, revealed that the Agency had initiated the awards as a way of recognizing the efforts of stakeholders in environmental managements.

The recipients of the awards included journalists from Daily Mail, Times of Zambia, Muvi TV and 5FM, among others.
