SABSTIC Industries Company of Lusaka, together with its director Hassan Sabra, have been convicted by the Lusaka Magistrates Court for discharging a pollutant into the environment.

According to Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) manager for corporate affairs Irene Chipili-Lungu the company was found guilty of the offence after it discharged a pollutant into the environment without an emission licence.

Facts before Magistrate David Simusamba were that the company and Sabra between February 1 and 10 emitted a pollutant into the environment without authority from ZEMA.

The accused failed to comply with the requirements of a compliance order issued by ZEMA on 1ST February , whose compliance date was with immediate effect.

Ms. Lungu said that ZEMA wished to remind all facilities to obtain necessary licences from the agency as stipulated by the environmental law and other relevant laws.

She further urged industries to uphold environmentally friendly practices.

The matter comes up on March 7 for sentencing.
