SCAVENGERS at the infamous Chunga dumpsite in Lusaka have continued plying their craft in defiance of Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) and Lusaka City Council (LCC) security measures.

ZEMA and LCC declared the dumpsite prohibited and stepped up security measures following the outbreak of cholera.

One of the residents in the area, Mary Zgambo said that the scavengers had not stopped picking through garbage at the dumpsite.

“I have seen them move on the dumpsite immediately the security officers moved out,” she complained. And Council Public Relations Manager, George Sichimba, has confirmed receiving a report on the matter.

“Yes we have received a report over the scavengers moving on the site and I can confirm that we have come up with modalities to reinforce security and we are going to be working with the Zambia police to ensure that the dumpsite is guarded 24 hours,” he said Mr Sichimba said that people should understand that the measures of suspending scavenging at Chunga dumpsite was meant for their well-being and not to hinder their life style or source of income.

He has further warned the residents of Lusaka to desist from throwing waste in public places and drainages saying culprits would be arrested.

“We have arrested about six individuals who will soon appearing in court. As a council we are on alert and vigilant and we will not spare anyone found wanting,” he warned.
