Kalumbila Minerals Limited under, the Trident Foundation , has donated cleaning materials towards the school cleaning program in Kalumbila district.
The school cleaning exercise is an initiative by the district education board secretary’s aimed at cleaning all the 34 schools in the district in order to curb the possible outbreak of cholera.
Speaking at the hand over and official launch of the exercise at Jiwundu Secondary School, Trident Foundation Community relations coordinator Alex Mapapayi said the Foundation had come in with material support to create awareness about the dangers of keeping surroundings dirty.
He said the mining company had a working relationship with the community, hence the need to see the community free from water borne diseases that could affect the school children.
“This whole thing shows our concern for the communities and our passion to see that even our school children are learning from very clean environment,’’ Mr Mapapayi said.
He said the mining company would continue to support the communities to improve the water reticulation system around the areas of influence.
“We will continue working with government departments such as education, agriculture, health among others,’’ he added.
And receiving the donation, Kalumbila district education standards officer Collins Monde emphasised the need to keep school surroundings clean.
He said his office had taken keen interest in ensuring that schools in the district maintained high levels of hygiene to avoid the cholera outbreak.
He thanked the mining company for the gesture.
“The onus is on us including managements in all the 34 schools to ensure that we keep our surroundings clean,’’ he said.
The donated materials included gumboots, 1000 by 10 kilogram bags of hydrated lime, 500 of boxes chlorine and fuel.
