ZAF honours ABSA Marathon champ

THE Zambia Air Force ZAF has honoured ABSA Marathon “champ” Tisa Kalemba for her dedication and fighting spirit which saw her secure third position in the 42-kilometre race of the 2023 Absa Marathon.

And Kalemba hailed her “destiny helpers” for changing her life for the better after going through numerous challenges in Mkushi where she worked as a part-time maid.

ZAF Commander, Lieutenant-General Collin Barry said ZAF had employed Kalemba as a civilian employee to run under the Red Arrows Athletics Club.

Barry said the Air Force identifies itself with Tisa’s fighting spirit and courage. 

“Tisa embodies the attitude we want to see in our personnel and in all those we interact with. I am pleased to announce that Tisa has been adopted to run under the Red Arrows Athletics Club; subsequently she has been employed as a civilian employee,” Barry said.

Barry encouraged Tisa to continue with the same spirit and focus on her dream, noting that she had the support of so many as she carries the hopes of those who now look up to her.

Barry also reaffirmed ZAF’s commitment to continue to contribute to the growth and development of all sports in in the country under the Red Arrows brand.

Meanwhile, Minister of Sports, Youth and Arts Elvis Nkandu hailed ABSA Bank for setting up the unprecedented platform that has unveiled a star in Kalemba.

Nkandu said Tisa’s story is a testament to the human spirit and the transformative power of sport.

Nkandu encouraged the Zambia Athletics to take keen interest in Tisa’s talent so that she can soon join the national team to represent the country at continental and global levels.

And ABSA Bank Managing Director Mizinga Melu described Kalemba’s journey as a beacon of hope and inspiration. 

Melu noted that Kalemba’s achievement against all odds serves as a reminder that with determination, resilience, and support, one can conquer any obstacle.

She applauded individuals and organisations which stepped forward to support Kalemba’s new chapter. 

“The generosity of the Zambia Airforce, Trade Kings, Prudential, MTN, Zambeef, Liquid Technologies, Java Foods, and many others, both corporate and individual, is a testament to the unity of purpose that exists within our community,” Melu said.
